The United Pegasus Foundation (UPF) is a
501(c)(3) non-profit Organization founded in 1994.

We are dedicated to providing a safe haven for Thoroughbred horses coming off the racetracks.

UPF has become one of the largest thoroughbred retirement, rehabilitation and adoption organizations, saving hundreds of former racehorses from an uncertain destiny by giving them a humane and deserved retirement.

With an operating cost of approximately $350,000 a year, UPF works constantly on raising funds thru grants, our sponsor a horse program, yearly fundraisers and the generosity of donors to perform its mission and maintain its well-equipped farm with a carrying capacity of 100 horses.

UPF RESCUES HORSES

In Late May, The United Pegasus Foundation took in 42 horses from CERF (California Equine Retirement Foundation). These horses were starving, had we not facilitated their removal from CERF’s property, they would have been dead within weeks. 17 of the 42 horses were listed as either being in poor or critical health.

No veterinary care or farrier services were performed in the past 9 months prior to their removal. Animal Control was called many times during the early months of 2019, but unfortunately the only way Animal Control gets involved is when horses are actually dead on the property. It is only then, will they act.

This has been a tremendous undertaking. Our staff and supporters have risen to the occasion and have made it possible for all of these horses to make a full recovery. This has been a financial strain; however, it was well worth it watching these malnourished horses come back to life. This is why we are here to fulfill our mission statement and make sure all equines have a soft place to land during hard times.

Below are some of the horses that we rescued:

UPF HORSE OF THE MONTH

HOME RUN KITTEN

Meet Home Run Kitten, our May 2019 Horse of the Month.

RACING CAREER:

Home Run Kitten had a very accomplished racing career during his five years on the track.

He competed in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (Gr. 2), Del Mar Derby (Gr. 2), Eddie D. Stakes (Gr. 3), Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (Gr. 1), Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (Gr. 2), Arcadia Stakes (Gr. 2), Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (Gr. 2), San Simeon Stakes (Gr. 3), American Stakes (Gr. 3), American Stakes (Gr. 3), Shoemaker Miles Stakes (Gr. 1), Triple Bend Stakes (Gr. 1), Bing Crosby Stakes (Gr. 1), Daytona Stakes (Gr. 3) and the Pat O’Brien Stakes (Gr. 2).

As with most geldings as they get older he began to drop to the claiming ranks and spent 2018 at the claiming level. He also survived the San Luis Rey Downs/Lilac Fire on December 7, 2017.

Nearly a year after the fire he sustained a career ending bow tendon injury. He finished his career with $514,245 in earnings.

On 3-16-2019 Home Run Kitten came home to the United Pegasus Foundation, his forever home, for a well earned retirement.

He now enjoys his days basking in the sun and playing with his buddies Zuri Chop, Mr. Zippers, Interrogator and Pat the Bear.

Home Run Kitten needs a sponsor and so does his buddies. Please donate so we can continue to provide a forever home to these amazing athletes.

HAY HAY HAY

Our on going efforts to raise funds to purchase hay to feed our very large herd of horses.

Each truck and trailer load costs, as of now, approximately $8,500.00, which will last about 8 weeks.

We are continuing our fund raising efforts over the winter months, as the loads of alfalfa will increase in price.

Please help by donating towards our hay fund.

The United Pegasus Foundation is Verified and Received the Accreditation by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.
